Building Science

The building science team is responsible for envelope design, heat flow modeling, and thermal analysis on windows. A well-designed envelope drastically reduces fixed costs and energy needs while also mitigating potential health hazards. In addition to designing the building envelope, this team is also responsible for performing a life cycle analysis (LCA) of the entire build.

Interested in becoming a member of the building science team?

Responsibilities:

  • Completing a Life Cycle Assessment  (LCA) in accordance with Solar Decathlon requirements

  • Completing periodic LCAs as design evolves

  • Collaborating with all sub-teams to collect data on building materials and quantities to complete LCAs

  • Researching and implementing novel material solutions to improve LCA results

  • Attending weekly team meetings

Candidate Requirements:

  • Able to dedicate 3-6 hours a week to the team

  • Self-motivated and able to work with little supervision

  • Willing to learn new things and ask questions

  • Passionate about sustainability/green buildings

  • Strong communication skills

  • Proficient in Excel

Candidate Preferences/Assets:

  • Previous experience with completing a Life Cycle Analysis

  • Knowledge about zero energy/zero carbon buildings
