Civil / Geological

The civil/geological team defines the ways in which our structure and its inhabitants interact with the earth. Site analysis, geotechnical studies, foundation design, utility planning, green roof design, and selection of edible plants are just a few of the many things within their purview!

Interested in becoming a member of the civil / geo team?

Responsibilities:

  • Analyzing borehole logs, geotechnical investigation reports, and surficial geology maps to determine site soil conditions, bearing capacity, groundwater conditions, potential for geothermal energy generation, and plant suitability

  • Determining the best foundation option for site considering capacity provided, seismic resilience, cost, sustainability, and ease of material sourcing

  • Researching and designing stormwater and groundwater management strategies, including landscaping and green roof (in coordination with mechanical and architecture)

  • Designing service connections to tie into off-site utility mains and coordinating on-site inverts with mechanical, in accordance with BC Building Code and relevant design standards

  • Creating schematics and construction drawings (e.g., plan, sections, details)

  • Attending weekly team meetings

Candidate Requirements:

  • Able to dedicate 5-10 hours a week to the team

  • Collaborative mindset

  • Self-motivated and able to work with little supervision, enjoys learning new things and asking questions

  • Passion for sustainability

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Basic knowledge of soil mechanics, hydraulics, and hydrology

  • Proficient in AutoCAD and Excel

Candidate Preferences:

  • Civil or geological engineering student (or similar field of study)

  • Previous experience in geotechnical field investigation and/or design

  • Previous experience in utility design

  • Previous experience in stormwater management design
